Now on to the collection for today. Cloisonne is is an ancient technique for decorating metal objects. The decoration is formed by adding compartments and separating them by solder silver or gold wires or strips between the compartments. The compartments can be inlayed with cut gemstones, glass, and other materials. In recent times the inlay is made with vitreous enamel.
In ancient times the technique was mostly used for jewelry, fitting for clothing, weapons, or other small objects decorated with geometric designs. During the Byzantine Empire thinner wires were developed to allow more pictorial images to be created. These were used mostly for religious images and jewelry, and always with enamel. As the enamel technique spread to China it started to be used on larger items like bowls and vases.
Enjoy the collection.
